What is Med Pay?

I think we are all wincing from the increase in car insurance payments. There are various items you can sign up for when you buy insurance such as comprehensive and collision. One item you can select is Med Pay.

There are two kinds of Med Pay. One is Primary Med Pay and one is secondary. If you are in an accident where the other person is at fault or if you are at fault your Primary Med Pay will cover your medical expenses up to a certain figure. $5000 is a typical amount and is more than enough for most car accidents unless you go to a hospital and their expenses are exorbitant. I will not get into this but you may have some reality on this if you have ever gotten a bill from a hospital.

Secondary Med Pay first tries to get other health insurance to cover your expense and then the car insurance kicks in. This might not be a good approach but check it out. For a doctor like me who sees car accident patients Primary Med Pay is good. We get directly paid and you do not need to see a lawyer on your accident to get your bills covered. So this item on insurance could be beneficial to you. The thing to do is check this out with your insurance agent or the company. Also verify that your Med Pay covers you even if you are at fault. Hope this is useful to you.

Sincerely,
